Rear Party (Whales & Ice Bergs)

Ice Berg

A collection of photos that were taken during the rear party phase of the expedition. They show some pictures of the town of Nanortalik, the ice bergs that were in the bay behind the town and the fantastic opportunity to watch (what we assume) was a female Humpback whale and her calf.

Ice Berg

The container is now packed and the only outstanding activity is for the rear party to return to the UK. Our journey starts tomorrow afternoon as we embark on the boats that will take us from Nanortalik to Nararsasaq before flying to the UK via Reykjavik.  Our lives are about to change and as well as being reunited with loved ones we will be reimmersed in the normality of life in the UK.  Tassermiut fjord will, as it is tonight be largely unseen. Nanortlik’s population will continue with their own normality – not that our intrusion has caused significant disruption........

Ice axe training

It tempts fate to even suggest that the expedition is over but three Fires are now Back at base camp and the forth is expected within hours; so we are entering the final phases of our expedition time in Greenland. It remains important that none of us fall into the trap of relaxing too much and forgetting that we still need to remain focused on the close down activity that will dominate the next 48 hours before the majority of the expedition members head for Narasarsaq and the start of the return journey to UK via Iceland.

Isuma Fire

It is now mid August and we are all repeatedly amazed at the speed with which the expedition has progressed. Time flies when you are having fun – and that is certainly the case for the whole expedition. As three fires will spend the next few days completing their science work, one fire (Kuuk / Fluviology) are completing their time on the ice. On August 17th all fires will return to base camp for a cleaning and organising frenzy before starting the journey home. However, there is some time to pass before then and all of the fires have a busy schedule between now and August 17th. From my own perspective (as the chief leader) I have been thoroughly impressed with the young explorers and the way they have embraced the culture of the expedition and all of the learning opportunities presented to them.

Snow Ball fight

The most significant part of this latest missive is, as it should be, the writings of the YEs – in this case Qaqqaq (Geology) Fire.  It captures the sense of fun and adventure but don’t be mislead into thinking that this is merely some outdoor camping experience that revolves around snowball fights and singsongs.......

Life in Tasermiut Fjord has settled into a routine and it’s a stark reality that we are now more than half way through our stay.  But routine is what we strive to leave behind as we continue to explore our own and Greenland’s boundaries.........

Leadership Through The Atlantic - Leg 10

LTTA Leg 11

Over a year the yacht Discoverer sailed the breadth of the Atlantic, from the high latitudes and Ice of Antarctica and The Arctic to the sweltering heat and humidity of The Tropics, each leg of this year long journey faced different challenges as successive crews faced the uncertainty, dangers and rewards of ocean sailing. An integral part of the expedition is the Leadership Through The Atlantic programme. This programme targeted over one hundred selected young soldiers at the end of their initial Army basic training who had never sailed before but who had a unique opportunity for further personal and leadership development.

British Army Antarctic Expeditions 2007 - 2008

BAAE 07-08

BAAE 07-08 is the third such expedition in recent years. Continuing the theme, ethos and methodology of its predecessors in 2001 and 2004.

In December 08, 16 soldiers sailed a 67 foot yacht, "Discoverer" from the Falkland Islands to the Antarctic Peninsula. They crossed The Drake Passage, with its deserved reputation as one of the roughest seas in the world, to arrive on the Danco Coast. Relying on their own determination and resource, they will spent the following 2 months building on the work of previous BAAE and other expeditions by exploring this little known area.
