British Schools Exploring Society Greenland Expedition 2009
“The object of the Society and Expedition is to advance the education of young people by providing inspirational, challenging, scientific expeditions to remote, wild environments and so promote the development of their confidence, teamwork, leadership, and spirit of adventure and exploration.”
Exploration and Development
At the end of July 2009 a total of 50 Young Explorers will embark on a 5 week challenge that will encapsulate exploration, adventure, discovery, self reliance, team work, tolerance, understanding of the wider world, themselves and others. The expedition will set up a base camp in the Tasermiut Fjord, Southern Greenland and teams (known as FIRES) will explore the wilderness, glaciers and mountains of the surrounding area. Scientific Field Studies
To further develop the Yong Explorer's, a structured scientific programme will be carried out whilst the Fires explore the un-spoilt wilderness of the Tasermiut Fjord. This programme covers Glaciology, Geology, Social Sciences and Hydrology but to name a few. These scientific projects will be expertly led by specialists in their fields with the published results adding to the wider scientific world's knowledge of the area. Journal
The expedition plans to update the journal at least once a week and more often if conditions and our work schedule permits. However, we are relying on solar power to run the necessary equipment, so depending on the weather and the normal expedition expectations (no one has broken the cable, dropped the laptop, or 101 of the other possible outcomes), do not worry if you have not heard from us.
Ultimately the expedition will work on the old adage
NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!
