Vicki Paris

Expedition Doctor

Victoria Paris

Vicki is originally from Mattingley in Hampshire but is currently living and working in Newcastle. Vicki is a doctor with the NHS and her interests include travelling, tennis, singing in the Gateshead Sage chamber choir and SCUBA Diving.

I studied medicine at Newcastle University, graduating in 2007.  Since then I have worked in hospitals in County Durham and Darlington.  As an undergraduate I taught sexual health education to secondary school students in Newcastle, and volunteered at a health clinic for a Maasai tribe in Tanzania and at a paediatrics hospital in Nepal.
My outdoors experience started with the Duke of Edinburgh award.  After leaving school I joined an expedition to South America and caught the travel bug, having taken every opportunity to go travelling since.  I trained as a Dive Master in Honduras, and I’m always dreaming of somewhere exotic to go SCUBA diving. At medical school I set up a project for students to volunteer for Light in Africa, an NGO in Tanzania, and led the first group out there: camping in the bush, building a house by mixing mortar with our feet and carrying buckets of mosquito infested water on our heads, was a highlight.

Although I’m hoping my medical skills will be needed as little as possible in Greenland, I’m excited about putting them to use in a challenging environment, and I’m looking forward to learning mountaineering skills with team Kuuk as we explore the ice.

Lindsey Weare

Lindsey Weare

Assistant Leader Lindsay is from Exeter, Devon and enjoys walking, camping, running and rowing and is currently studying history at university.

"I have just finished my second year of university reading history and I am using my summer holidays to go on BSES’s Greenland expedition. I have been a keen hill walker from an early age and have spent many a weekend walking and camping in the Dartmoor National Park, Devon. In addition, I have spent time exploring other wilderness areas in the U.K.and I have also taken part in some conservation work. As a cadet in the Air Training Corps for a number of years I had the opportunity to learn camp craft, navigational, and leadership skills. By this time I had been fully bitten by the outdoors bug and in 2004, I went to Iceland with BSES on a six-week expedition. This adventure I thoroughly enjoyed. I learnt many new skills and most importantly, how to live and work in a completely remote and testing environment. Furthermore, I made a number of good friends who I still keep in contact with to this day. A BSES expedition for me was a greatly rewarding, worthwhile and fun opportunity. Therefore, through going to Greenland as an assistant leader I hope to ensure YEs get as much out of the expedition as I did as a YE and have a really memorable and enjoyable experience. Personally, I hope to improve my leadership skills and confidence in a remote environment in preparation for a career as an army officer.  I also wish to learn more about Greenland itself: its climate, terrain, culture, and history".

Emmelyn Van Zanten

Emmelyn Van Zanten

Emmelyn is a student living in Colchester. Emmelyn has a love for travelling, and has experienced life in many places; she was born and brought up in Northern Ireland and lived for a year in the Netherlands. She has recently completed a gap year during which she lived in South Africa and travelled to Singapore & Australia.
Emmelyn’s interests include modern history, music, craft activities and anything adventurous. Hobbies include squash, swimming, fishing and travelling!

In Greenland I am hoping to experience something that I have never experienced before. My previous travels have mostly been to understand culture, however in this expedition I would like to focus more on admiring the spectacular creation. In my gap year, I completed 10 months of voluntary work in a shanty town near the Botswana border, in South Africa. This was a very rewarding experience; I decided to embark on this expedition to allow me to undertake this adventurous journey and contribute to society in a different way that I have before.
