Expedition Fires (Teams)
The British Schools Exploring Society Greenland Expedition 2009 is broken down into 4 teams. Historically the teams are called FIRES. (this is not because we sit around a camp fire each night, however if the opportunity does prevail during our busy schedule we may well make use of it) Each fire consists of 12 people. The number of 12 is formulated because each tent holds 3 people (not necessarily comfortably). This allows the tent and group equipment to be divided between three instead of two.....the lighter the load the more room for scientific equipment!!
The fires are made up as follows:
2 x Fire Leaders: These are very qualified and experienced people in both their respective scientific fields and as leaders in the outdoor world.
Assistant Leader: Usually an experienced Young Explorer who wishes to progress onto leading their own fire. Assisting the fire leaders give then necessary experience and ensures that they are nurtured and developed into the leaders of tomorrow.
9 Young Explorer (YE's): The YE's are between 16-20 years old and come from all walks of live from across the United Kingdom with each bringing their own skills and experiences.
